Chromium Nitride (CrN) is an outstanding coating for firearms and small parts. Typically used in industrial machine parts to prevent corrosion and wear, it is applied to the metal through physical vapor deposition (PVD) and is a great representative for state of the art firearms plating. This robust coating has a polished, silver appearance. CrN is an excellent, superior alternative to NP3+. CrN has proven to be the superior chrome choice for the following reasons:
- High lubricity producing a self lubricating effect
- High resistance to abrasion and wear: Most durable chrome coating
- High corrosion resistance
- High chemical and heat resistance
- Low friction coefficient producing smooth operations
What can CrN be applied to?
CrN can only be applied to metals such as carbon steel and stainless steel. It is appropriate for frames, slides, barrels, and control parts. It cannot be applied to aluminum, brass, or polymer.
How do I care for CrN?
CrN is very corrosion resistant but like all plated finishes, it’s best to apply a very light coat of oil to CrN for long-term storage. A solid cleaning every once in a while will be sufficient to maintain the coating.
